Working on new songs and planning a summer of festivals and gigs!
So the EP is finally nearing completion, thanks to the fine handiwork of Seb Pecchia at Riverside Studios in Bath. Just final mix tweaks, mastering and artwork to sort out ready for release early in the New Year. We are very excited! Follow us Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.
Great time at the Purbeck Folk Festival, also recording some beautiful footage on the Purbeck clifftops for our video for 'The Dorset Gap. Won't be out till next year but it was still great fun (thanks to the bank holiday ramblers for bearing with us!).
The Owls are now busy recording their new EP, with tracks for their second album due out in 2012. Follow us on Facebook for other summer festival performances!

Owl in the Sun finalists for the Isambard nu-Folk Award. We were excited to be among the five finalists for the Isambard nu-Folk Award on 26th February in Bristol. Although we didn’t win we had a great time and winners ‘Under the Driftwood Tree’ put on a really good performance. http://www.bristolfolkfestival.com/news
Bristol Acoustic Music Festival. It was a joy to play at Bristol’s St George’s for the Bristol Acoustic Music festival last weekend. Hopefully some live coverage will be broadcast soon on BCFM. Thanks for having us!
BBC Introducing on BBC Radio Bristol. We’re chuffed to have just been played on BBC Introducing on BBC Radio Bristol. ‘Flags’ was picked up out of a number we have uploaded onto the ‘BBC Introducing’ site. Quote: ‘Banjo jangle’ – nice!
Live on BBC Radio Solent. Those nice folks at BBC Radio Solent have asked us to come back and play a couple of songs live on Saturday morning’s Sally Taylor Show. If you live on the South Coast tune in to FM 96.1 at around 9am and we’ll play you a few tracks to accompany your breakfast. Four of us will be on the show featuring new track ‘Laura’, as well as ‘Flags’ and ‘Hay Bluff Revelation’.
New Forest Festival. What a lovely festival – the inaugural New Forest Festival, which we hope will be the first of many. It was a real pleasure to perform the main stage of this on the Saturday night. See pictures of us on: www.myspace.com/owlinthesun
Bristol Harbourside Festival. We’re looking forward to playing at Bristol Harbour side festival at the weekend. Free music by the water in sunny Bristol – should be a good day out. Hope to see a few friendly faces there.
Larmer Tree Festival. What a fantastic time we had at the Lamer Tree festival! The first night saw driving rain and gale force winds, but by dawn the sky had cleared reveal beautiful weather which held for the rest of the weekend. We performed on the Arc Stage at mid-day on Saturday, packed and with a great vibe. The next morning we played live on BBC Radio Solent in the ‘Social’ tent with Sally Taylor and the legend Johnnie Walker! Very exciting and a wonderful weekend had by all.
Songs from the Shed. You can now watch and listen to Owl in the Sun performing in a garden shed – yes really! It’s a great place – an old shed packed with quirky objects, which you cram into and play your music completely unplugged – and its posted on their website. It’s really taking off in a viral way and all recorded on a regular £150 digital stills camera! Watch us on http://www.songsfromtheshed.com/SESSION-36-OWL-IN-THE-SUN%281960371%29.htm
Taunton Brewhouse – Support for Demon Barbers. We supported the Demon Barber Roadshow last Thursday night – a great night with a nice review in the local Somerset Gazette: “…Owl in the Sun may not realise just how good they have become. This terrific Somerset 6-piece performed their own witty, energetic and accessible songs from 2009's 'Outside the City Way of Things' superbly and with obvious enjoyment and the happiness they exuded was contagious.”
Glastonbury Emerging Talent Showcase. We were invited to play at the opening night of the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition last weekend! As one of only 18 bands out of 1600 who were invited to perform we felt pretty lucky. It was a great night and Michael Eavis said we were his favorite band of the night – praise indeed!
You can see pictures of us performing here: http://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/glastonbury/2010/newtalent/photos-GlastonburyETC-OwlInTheSun-KW.shtml
Radio 2 play. Its been fantastic to hear several tracks played in the last few weeks by legendary Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2! ‘Flags’ was played on his Saturday Night show a few weeks ago and has just been followed by ‘Canyon’ this weekend. As long time fans of Bob Harris we’re over the moon with this double airplay – thank you Bob!
Album released. Our debut album ‘Outside the City Way of Things’ was released this week, just in time for Christmas, with some great reviews, including Mark Kermode: “This is a lovely album of songs, wittily written, artfully arranged and niftily played. I’m a big fan!”. Its available to purchase from our website, with tracks to listen to on www.myspace.com/owlinthesun
