Stars in a Box (C Cain)
They meet at the side of St Pauls, in an eddy in the stream,
of rushing suits and heels, where the blooms will be lost, and the looks won’t be seen.
Just like the crypt under foot, an upturned collar hides the rest
Foundations are put, the bodies are hid, secrets are blessed
Her turn becomes a glance, this old familiar dance
They watch the trains for the coast on their way out of the city
The whole town’s out tonight, the bars are wall to wall
Strangers hold the streets, their words are lost amongst it all
He’ll be the ferryman, and her, the passenger
Him in wool, and her, in silk
He’ll be the wing, and her, the feather
Into the winter’s night, they’ll go together
She says “how these diamonds shine, they’re stars in a box,
but will he ever be mine or will he not?”
As the day gives way, darkness is a witch’s cloak:
spells are in the air, they follow them like trails of smoke
“The river washes this town and takes away its dirt.
Let’s throw our promises down, over the bridge, and watch them float.”
