Hall of Mirrors (C Cain)
Thrills and whirls on the edge of town, from the Swing Boats to the lights,
between the screams on the Switchbacks, Moon Rockets in the night.
A place to keep our loved ones close, when the travelling show’s in town.
We can see all our desires there, magnified in the life of the fair.
Mirror don’t change, these pictures can’t be re-arranged.
If we can’t understand what we see, they’re gonna think it’s me.
Mirror don’t bend, looking glass don’t end-over-end.
If we can’t understand our grip,
we’re a fast car in the dark, hands above the whip,
reaching out into the pitch.
We got a ticket on the Speedway, Chair-o-Planes as they spin.
We watch the showman take a turn; the Mirror Maze draws us in
With its painted front all red and gold, and the sound of the Coaster in our ears,
we can see that all our dreams are here, magnified in the life of the fair.
Now these reflections are all I know,
and they’re as real as the earth below,
or the gentle hand on my back
as memory fades to black.
